Traditional Chinese herbal remedies have been used, to great effect, since antiquity and are still the most widely used medicines in the world. In fact, 30 per cent of modem conventional medicines are made from plant-derived substances.
Although they are natural and there is a lower incidence of serious reactions than to conventional medications, herbal medicines should still be used with caution. Most are gentle and unlikely to cause serious side effects, but because, like conventional medication, they contain physiologically active agents, side effects can occur.
